What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia, also known as ‘gyno’, ‘man boobs’, ‘moobs’, or ‘male breast enlargement’, is the development of excess breast gland tissue in men. Hereโs what you need to know about the condition and how you can get started on resolving this condition:
Hormonal Imbalance
Estrogen vs. Testosterone: One of the main culprits of gynecomastia is the imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. This can be due to an excess of estrogen, a lack of testosterone, or a combination of both.
Causes of Imbalance: There can be a wide variety of causes behind this hormonal imbalance, including steroid use, medications, puberty, among others. Unfortunately, in many cases the reasons behind gynecomastia are simply unknown.
Excess Gland vs Fat
Excess Breast Gland Tissue: Excess gland tissue is the primary symptom of gynecomastia. This is where there is an abnormal growth of glandular tissue in the chest.
Excess Adipose (Fatty) Tissue: Men with gynecomastia often also have excess fatty tissue in the chest area. When this is a standalone issue, it’s called pseudogynecomastia, but in many cases both symptoms are present.
Gynecomastia Surgery Details
Removal of Gland Tissue (Excision): This procedure involves surgically removing the excess glandular tissue from the chest. By excising this tissue, the chest becomes flatter and achieves a more masculine contour.
Removal of Fatty Tissue (Liposuction): In this process, liposuction is performed to remove the excess fat from the chest area. This technique complements the gland removal, resulting in a smoother and more even chest appearance.
Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery
More Contoured Chest: Gynecomastia surgery sculpts a more traditionally masculine chest shape with an improved chest aesthetic that can lead to a better overall body image.
Improved Self-Confidence: Beyond physical changes, the surgery often provides mental health benefits as well by fostering a positive self-image. Many of our patients feel more confident and comfortable with their appearance after male breast reduction surgery.
Gyno Overview
Gynecomastia (โMan Boobsโ) is a condition that leads to the development of excess breast tissue.
Causes of Gynecomastia
While there can be many causes behind your gyno, one of the main drivers is the hormonal imbalance between estrogen and testosterone.
Gyno Grades & Stages
Gynecomastia can be broken down into different grades or stages depending on the severity of the condition.

Types of Gynecomastia
Adult Gynecomastia
As with most cases of gynecomastia, adult gynecomastia is typically caused by an imbalance of testosterone and estrogen.
Adolescent Gynecomastia
Changes in the natural production of testosterone and estrogen during puberty can result in gynecomastia.
Bodybuilder Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia can develop due to the use of anabolic steroids or prohormones in bodybuilders. If the condition persists, undergoing gynecomastia surgery can fix the issue.
Revision Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia revision surgery is usually performed for a few different reasons. In some cases, the original surgery may have been done incorrectly. In other cases, complications during healing may require a revision.
Pseudogynecomastia
Sometimes male breasts are not caused by excess glandular tissue, but from excess adipose (fatty) tissue. Liposuction is typically used to resolve this issue.
Puffy Nipples
Puffy nipples, a variation of gynecomastia, refers to the enlargement of the nipples and the surrounding areolae. Although less prominent, it can still cause significant mental and physical distress.
Senior Gynecomastia
While gynecomastia can occur at any age, it becomes increasingly prevalent among seniors due to a variety of factors, including hormonal changes, medications, and age-related health conditions.
Gynecomastia Post Weight Loss
Gynecomastia surgery is often very helpful after significant weight loss, when there is significant excess skin and tissue. Many of our patients undergo gynecomastia surgery after weight loss.
