What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia, also known as ‘gyno’, ‘man boobs’, ‘moobs’, or ‘male breast enlargement’, is the development of excess breast gland tissue in men. Hereโs what you need to know about the condition and how you can get started on solving your issue:
Hormonal Imbalance
Estrogen vs. Testosterone: One of the main culprits of gynecomastia is the imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. This can be due to an excess of estrogen, a lack of testosterone, or a combination of both.
Imbalance Causes: There can be a variety of causes behind this hormonal imbalance such as steroid use, medications, puberty, among others. However, in many cases the reasons behind gynecomastia development are simply unknown.
Excess Gland vs Fat
Excess Breast Gland Tissue: When defining gynecomastia, excess gland tissue is the primary factor behind the condition. This is where there is an abnormal growth of glandular tissue in the male chest.
Excess Adipose (Fatty) Tissue: Often, men with gynecomastia also have excess fatty tissue in the chest area. When this is a standalone issue, it is called pseudogynecomastia. However, in many cases, both symptoms are present.
Surgery Details
Removal of Gland Tissue (Excision): This procedure involves surgically removing the excess glandular tissue from the chest. By excising this tissue, the chest becomes flatter and achieves a more masculine contour.
Removal of Fatty Tissue (Liposuction): In this process, liposuction is performed to remove the excess fat from the chest area. This technique complements the gland removal, resulting in a smoother and more even chest appearance.
Benefits
More Contoured Chest: The surgery sculpts a more traditionally masculine chest shape with an improved chest aesthetic that can lead to a better overall body image.
Improved Self-Confidence: Beyond physical changes, the surgery can uplift your mood and enhance your quality of life by fostering a positive self-image. Many patients feel more confident and comfortable with their appearance post-surgery.
Gyno Overview
Gynecomastia (โMan Boobsโ) is a condition that leads to the development of excess breast tissue.
Gyno Causes
While there can be many causes behind your gyno, one of the main drivers is the hormonal imbalance between estrogen and testosterone.
Grades & Stages

Candidates should be in good overall health, free from any conditions that could impair healing. Speak with our doctors to see if you are a candidate for surgery.
Realistic Expectations
Maintaining realistic expectations regarding the outcomes of gynecomastia surgery is crucial, as the procedure can significantly enhance chest appearance but may not achieve absolute perfection due to individual anatomical variations and other factors.
Adolescents
While most surgeries are performed on adult men, adolescents experiencing severe gynecomastia may also benefit. However, they should understand the need for potential future surgeries as their bodies continue to develop.

Types of Gynecomastia
Adult Gynecomastia
As with most cases of gynecomastia, adult gynecomastia is typically caused by an imbalance of the hormones testosterone and estrogen.
Adolescent Gynecomastia
During puberty in boys, changes in the natural production of testosterone and estrogen can result in gynecomastia.
Bodybuilder Gynecomastia
It is possible that gynecomastia can develop due to the use of anabolic steroids or prohormones by bodybuilders. If the condition continues, then undergoing surgical treatment can fix the issue in the long run.
Revision Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia revision may be indicated for a variety of reasons. In some cases, the original surgery may have been done incorrectly or there may be complications of healing resulting in poor results.
Pseudogynecomastia
Sometimes male breasts are not caused by excess gland tissue. Rather, your condition may be caused by excess adipose tissue. In these cases, liposuction can solve the issue.
Puffy Nipples
Puffy nipple, a variation of gynecomastia, refers to the enlargement of the nipples and the surrounding areolae. Although less prominent, it can still cause significant distress for those affected.
Senior Gynecomastia
While gynecomastia can occur at any age, it becomes increasingly prevalent among seniors due to various factors, including hormonal changes, medications, and age-related health conditions.
Post Weight Loss
Gynecomastia can also be found in adult males, particularly those who have undergone significant weight loss. In such cases, excess skin and tissue may remain, contributing to the appearance of enlarged breasts.
